My Teams
If one wonders why there are random sports interludes throughout the course of the blog, it is because I like sports. I especially lean toward the following squads…
Boston College Eagles — Through thick and thin.
Portland Trail Blazers — Get on board! “Rise with us.” Brandon Roy is the icyist cager around these days. I was also born in the year of our Saviors, Bill Walton, Jack Ramsay, Dave Twardzik, Lloyd Neal, Maurice Lucas, Larry Steele, Lionel Hollins, Johnny Davis, Bobby Gross, et al–1977.
Thank you, David Halberstam, departed though you are. The story of the Franchise Blazers-yore of Latter-Day Walton is forever inscribed in your delightfully important canon. The Breaks of the Game (to be linked to soon in a widget of some sort… just wait and buy it when I sponsor it). You are and shall be missed.
Boston Red Sox — My team since youth. It is a family tradition. The old man and his old man hail from The Hub.
Buffalo Sabres — Lindy Ruff!
NFL — I am admittedly wet-fingered when it comes to the NFL. Probably Patriots if I absolutely had to choose today. Raiders (for their once-menacing nature, Al Davis’s hair and tracksuits, Marcus Allen and Bo Jackson) and Falcons (the Deion years) were my teams growing up, though it was always hard to admit to Raiders fandom if you wanted to appear normal (i.e. not a gangster or gangster wannabe).
Civil War — Oregon State usually wins my allegiance (oh and the North, too, if we’re talking history). I probably enjoy each school just as equally, which is to say that it is not much at all. UO and OSU garner way too much attention in this state (in my opinion, of course).
Army – Navy Game — This year it was the Black Knights, but since my boys on the staff got shown the door, it is a wait-and-see. I became enamored of Navy in the 90s with a guy by the name of Stramanak (sp.?) playing fullback. That guy was a beast. I don’t know what happened to him…
